Teaching Studio Refurbishment

Dye House Drum Works: New Drum Kits, Cymbals and Technical Stations Installed in our Leicester Teaching Studios!

Mapex Mars kits have been all the talk here at Dye House Drum Works, with 2 brand new kits for our tuition rooms: a fusion set in ‘Bonewood’ white with black hardware and an LA/hybrid fusion configuration in ‘Bloodwood’ red with chrome fittings and stands. The finishes are stunning and the colours set off beautifully by each kit’s distinctive hardware pack. We have topped both sets with Aquarian Texture Coated heads and new cymbals too: Sabian XS20 sets in brilliant finish – an excellent all-round/mid price cymbal range. The kits sound amazing: our custom built rooms here do help as they are designed to support the natural acoustic properties of the drum kit, but this combination of great drums, cymbals and drumheads makes for an excellent, balanced and inspiring sound. I should mention the Mars bass drum pedal and hi-hat stands specifically here too, as everyone here has found them super-playable and I couldn’t agree more.

Each of our tuition studios is kitted out with an independent technical station, featuring Aquarian Tru-Bounce practice pads, a wall mounted mirror and Vic Firth rudiment charts. The mirrors are also aligned to be used while sat at the main drum kit.

Audio monitoring for CD and MP3 playback is fitted in all our rooms, via a mix of Ramsa, Yamaha, Sony, Peavey and Jamo sound systems, plus Tama Rhythm Watch metronomes for more focussed technical and timing work.

Leicester College Workshop

Dye House Drum Works – Music Workshops and Lectures.

Dye House Drum Works has been working closely with Leicester College, helping students gain entry to higher level education and pro/semi-pro careers in music. As part of this relationship, I was recently invited to host two lectures as a guest speaker at the college’s Abbey Park campus for students enrolled on the Performing Musician and Music Technology courses.

‘One Voice For Care’ event

Dye House Drum Works’ Lee Allatson supplies the percussive force behind the One Voice For Care charity choir event at De Montfort Hall, Leicester.

I was delighted this year to be asked to play for the One Voice For Care charity event at De Montfort Hall in Leicester by the Leicester City Male Voice Choir’s musical director, Edgars Cuzinskis. The night was held to raise money for the LOROS, Hope Against Cancer and Rainbows Hospice charities and featured The Fron Male Voice Choir, The Military Wives Choir and the Leicester City Male Voice Choir – augmented with members of several other county-wide men’s choirs.

Along with the opportunity to play an interesting mix of hit show tunes, pop ballad arrangements and more traditional hymnal choral items, the event provided an excellent vehicle by which to say Thank You, once again, to the LOROS Hospice, who provided such incredible care for my mum earlier this year.          [*Update: this event raised £9,600!]

Magna Band Improvisation Workshop

Dye House Drum Works Music Workshops in Leicester

What a pleasure it was to be invited by the Magna Band to host a workshop for their 2015 Summer Music Week.

The band is a community organisation open to players aged 8 years and up: “…Getting music into the community and the community into music…” is their slogan and they certainly seem to be busy in this, enjoying a full schedule of events throughout the year.

I was particularly interested to hear that the band will engage in cross-genre endeavours, as well as taking on more progressive/modern compositions, including recent projects with an Indian classical music group, and also in developing a performance of the American minimalist composer Terry Riley’s ‘In C’, where players are encouraged to improvise around a loose score. It was with this exciting angle to the band’s repertoire in mind, that I decided to try and aid in developing the notion of improvisation amongst these brave young musicians.

Leicester Drum Hang 2015

Lee Allatson Hosts a Music Workshop for Leicester Drummers at Quad Studios.

Drum Hang 2015 at Quad Studios, Leicester.

What a great day this was for drumming – and moreover a vibrant display of what Leicester has to offer in terms of drum kit players, teachers and a complete local support network for everything drum and drummer related!

Presented by local player/teacher and long time friend Tim Brown, the event was an open invitation to drummers to bring their kits along and jam together, chat drums and also partake in a program of masterclass-style workshops given through the day by Mark Haynes, Damon Clarridge, Tim and myself. Airto Moreira-Inspired Latin Ideas

Learn to play latin rhythms on the drum set at Dye House Drum Works, Leicester

I remember seeing – years ago – one of the old DCI Publishing VHS videos (we used to have them running in the shop all day in my retail days!) which had trailers featuring other titles available in their catalogue. One of these was for a latin-centred release by Airto Moreira. If you are not familiar with his work (I wasn’t at the time) check him out. Tracking down some of the content of this video is something I have had planned for a while and only recently finally got round to it. The Airto sticking is in the initial pattern and as I played around with this, I kind of ran with the ball… Have a play! …and speaking of footballs 🙂 check my new notation ‘scoring’ package, from Sibelius First: Continue reading
